A Reply to Warner Todd Huston's Article: Mike Huckabee Brings Up The One Thing About Kim Davis No One’s Talking About, But Should Be
Regarding Kim Davis and your article:
I realize a lot of people are feeling very strong about the current political climate, but in those instances where feelings are running high it is important to stick to the facts. This article is extremely bias. It is correct that the United States Supreme Court did not make any new laws that said to issue persons of the LGBT community marriage license, but that is not how the system works either. You say that Huckabee is giving Congress the "civics lesson that they never got in grade school." Really? I suppose that means your knowledge of the US government and its function is limited, and you are relying on Mike Huckabee to define the workings of the United States Government for you and your readership.
Just so you and your readers know, the United States Supreme Court does not make federal laws; because that is the duty of the legislative branch, i.e. Congress and the Senate. There are three branches of the US government, (1) the Administrative Branch (The President of the United States), (2) the Legislative Branch (Congress and the Senate, where they make and pass laws.), and finally (3) the Judicial Branch (The US Supreme Court). What the Supreme Court did do was strike down several laws and rulings that made Gay Marriage illegal. By striking down these laws, they are essentially negating the laws themselves, making those laws obsolete.
Where ever you stand on the issue is your opinion or belief, but the fact is it is the laws of the land, and this woman, Kim Davis, an elected official, took an oath to uphold the law of the land. By not issuing marriage licenses to couples that fill out the paperwork and are deemed eligible by law the clerks of that office are then required to issue those marriage licenses to those persons. If she chooses not to, which she most certainly did, she is going against the law and therefore in contempt, hence her current residence in the county jail. It is my opinion that since she feels so strongly that Gay marriage is wrong, then she should not be holding office or retaining a job that violates that belief. You would not be an executioner if you held a strong opinion or belief that the Death Penalty was wrong, would you?
In conclusion, I realize most the readers that agree with Mr. Huston's article have probably finished reading, but let me appeal to those of you on the fence in regards to gay marriage. It is not about you becoming gay and being required to marry someone of the same sex. Gay marriage is about persons of the LGBT community who are choosing (consensually) to devote their lives to another person. Take gender out of the equation and it is the same kind of love and devotion any straight couple can marry to be united as a couple. Why shouldn't all people be free to marry? Because equality is equality, if I can marry my husband then why couldn't our good friend marry his boyfriend? Equality is justice, equality is freedom, and we are the Free World, are we not?
